Chris: "I took this video diary at camp one day - about a mile or so from the main meadow where we would regularly film bears. It's an intense experience sleeping in a tent in bear country, but we were careful to take lots of precautions, including electric fences around our tents. The fences can zap a curious bear's nose with a surprising 5000 volt zap - a clear message not to proceed any further! We were also very careful not to bring anything odorous into our tents that might attract a bear - all of our food and toiletries were stashed in big bear resistant food container barrels at least 50 yards from our tents. The weather is very changeable in June and we experienced intense heat, and cold blustery days. The bears are around no matter what, and I have to say that this was among the most intensely immersive experiences I have ever had in bear country - camping for weeks in our own little community in this busy city of bears. As I say in the video - where else can you leave camp and film 12 brown bears half an hour later? I loved every minute of it."Nature joins adventurer and bear biologist Chris Morgan and filmmaker Joe Pontecorvo on a year-long motorcycle odyssey deep into Alaska's bear country to explore the amazing resiliency and adaptability of these majestic animals as they struggle to make a living in five dramatically diverse Alaskan ecosystems: coastal, urban, mountain, tundra, and pack ice."Bears of the Last Frontier" premieres on PBS Sunday, May 8, 2011 at 8pm and is part of the 29th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET.ORG for PBS.
