She is the author of "Radio On," "Take the Cannoli" and "The Partly Cloudy Patriot." Her new book, "Unfamiliar Fishes" (Riverhead/Penguin), chronicles the Americanization of Hawaii, from its annexation in 1898 to the last Hawaiian queen, who serenaded the first president from Hawaii during his 2009 inaugural parade.
