Minnesota Rep. Mark Olsen -- Mental Health Screening, Suicide and Antidepressants Minnesota House of Representatives Member, Mark Olsen speaks against mental health and suicide screening and the use of antidepressants use in children. Rep. Olsen references the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Report on Mental Health Screening of May 2004. The Report states; A. There is no evidence that screening for suicide risk reduces suicide attempts or mortality. B. There is limited evidence on the accuracy of screening tools to identify suicide risk. C. There is insufficient evidence that treatment of those at high risk reduces suicide attempts or mortality. D. No studies were found that directly address the harms of screening and treatment for suicide risk. Rep. Olsen also reference the FDA's black box warning which warns of a increased rish of suiciality in children who take antidepressants. This warning was recently extended to include young adults age 25 and younger. In England, government health agency have actually recommended that no antidepressants except Prozac be prescribed to children under 18.
