I have literally doubled the total amount of solar panel output to the batteries by installing heavy, large gauge wires from the solar panels to the charge controller and then through to the batteries. All of my wires along the whole path have been enlarged. I was using 12 and 10 ga to the charge controller before. Now I am using 6 and 8 ga wires. The performance increase is astounding. The original RV campsite hookup wires were used for this purpose because I had them laying around unused and could not afford to buy 30 feet of heavy gauge wire. Always use the biggest wire you can afford when hooking up your solar panels to get the full charge current to your batteries. I knew my wires were too small, but to keep The Off Grid Project on a budget, things take time to find inexpensively. You have to shop around or dig up used parts sometimes to save money. A high quality extension cord would also work well up to a certain extent. You always need to check the current capacity of the wires you are using and the total current coming from your solar panels. http://www.thediyworld.com/blog/?cat=111
