"Hi, I'm Janet Kennedy. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist and sleep specialist in New York City. You can find out more about me and my work on my website, If you're having a tough time sleeping, try not to stay in bed tossing and turning. All that does is get you more frustrated and angry that you're not sleeping. After about 15 minutes your body is going to release adrenaline and then it's going to be harder for you to get back to sleep. If you get out of bed and do something else until you feel sleepy again you'll probably get back to sleep faster than if you stayed in bed tossing and turning. It's better to be out and awake than in bed upset. Do something quiet like reading or listening to music to occupy your mind and take your thoughts away from things that might be bothering you. If your thoughts are racing, it can help to write them down or do a relaxation exercise to try to focus your thoughts on something else. Most important stay out of bed until you're sleepy because getting back into bed too soon can start the process all over again. Try not to worry about the next day, you'll get enough sleep to do what you need to do and then you can get back on track the next night. And don't stay in bed for extra time in the morning. Get up at your usual time so that your body will stay at its same cycle and you'll be ready for sleep the next night. "
