Hi, I'm Tim Coombs, co-pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Scotia, NY and a member of the network of biblical storytellers. To learn more about its mission, go to nbsint.org. The story of Cain and Abel is one of the first archetypical typical stories, we're introduced to and the Bible. Cain and Abel are the sons of Adam and Eve. Abel is the herdsman — in fact, some think his name is a pun on ""herdsman"" — and Cain is a farmer. And the story begins with them taking the first fruits of their work and presenting it to God as an offering, and for whatever reason, God prefers Abel's offering, the smell of the fat. And because of this, Cain gets very jealous. So jealous that in a rage, he kills his brother Abel! And then God finds out of them and says to Cain, ""Where is your brother Abel?"" Cain says that memorable line, ""Am I my brother's keeper?"" Well, God is very angry and banishes him, exiles him. In addition, God places a mark on Cain as a warning to all future people to avoid these dangers. That is the story of Cain and Abel
