Hi, I'm Debbie Catz. I'm a certified clinical hypnotherapist here in the San Francisco Bay area. I have a masters degree in social work. To learn more about this you can visit my website at And now I'm going to help you understand the simplicity of hypnosis. So, to stop smoking using hypnosis, the first thing you want to do, is you want to ask yourself, "Am I really ready?" And to assess your readiness. I spent a number of years teaching quit tobacco classes, and the first thing I would ask the people is on a scale of one to ten, with one being "I am not anywhere near ready, I love smoking," and ten being "I am so done, I am so ready," to assess yourself, where you're at. And if you're a one or a two, hypnosis probably isn't going to work, because you really aren't ready. So then you have to figure out ways, what you need to do, in order to get ready. So let's say you're a seven or an eight, and you're really feeling like you're ready, then you want to, probably the best thing would be to seek out the services of a hypnotist or a hypnotherapist because it can be a very easy process and sometimes, there are some programs where they're doing it in one session, helping people to quit smoking, but of course it depends, you know, on your readiness. And they mostly will use suggestive therapy, which is where they assist you in going into a deep state of relaxation, known as hypnosis, and then the subconscious mind, which is ninety percent of the brain, is open to new suggestions. So you will determine what some of the suggestions are that you want, like an example would be, that every time I feel like I want a cigarette, I drink a glass of water, or I enjoy a glass of water or a glass of juice. And so, things like that would be added into the session during the suggestion part of the therapy. And so, your subconscious mind would have the suggestion, that every time an urge to smoke comes about, you just take a glass of juice, or a glass of water, whatever it is you've chosen. So those kinds of things will be figured out ahead of the hypnosis session, and then the hypnotherapist or hypnotist will have everything that you want have put, basically, programmed into your subconscious mind. And it will make it really very easy, and people who use hypnosis to quit smoking find that they don't gain weight, and they don't have a lot of the aftereffects that people complain about when they're quitting, because all of that has been taken care of through the suggestions that were given during the session. So all the issues around smoking, if there are some other deeper behavioral issues that will be determined in the interview with the hypnotist, and all of those can be addressed through hypnosis. So I recommend finding somebody, a professional, probably one, maybe two sessions depending on your particular situation, might be all that is needed. But remember, you really have to be ready. So assess your readiness. And good luck!
