My name is Jeff White and I'm the research entomologist for Bed Bug Central and the host of Bedbug TV. I have no idea how I got into bugs and bed bugs. And here I am six years later and having a lot of fun working with bedbugs. And I'll be talking to you about pest control. You've just dealt with a bedbug infestation in your apartment and received a thousand dollar bill from your landlord saying that you have to pay for this bedbug infestation. What are your legal rights? Is that how things are supposed to work? What's going on with this situation? All common questions that I hear all the time, and people ask me, well you know, isn't my landlord responsible? And they're all fair questions and what I can say about legal rights when it comes to suffering through a bedbug infestation is that you have to check with your local government, your city and state. Because every city and every state can have different laws associated with bedbug infestations. Some of the things that are starting to pop up out there are is the landlord responsible? In a rental situation, many cities and states are finding that yes, the landlord is responsible for at least some, if not all of bedbug elimination services. But again, that may differ by different governments and there are some cities and states that don't have any laws out there about this.Because bedbugs are a recent problem, have just started to make a comeback in the past five to ten years, and there aren't laws to address these things yet because the court systems are just starting to deal with this. And so you may not get a straight answer. Some of the other laws that are out there now, some cities are requiring you to wrap items up in different types of disposal bags before you throw things out if you have a bedbug infestation in your house. So you want to check with those things if you're dealing with an infestation. Also you know, how is the landlord supposed to handle it? What actions are they supposed to take? Is there a right course of action? And again, check with your local government, your city and state officials and they should be able to provide you with more insight about what is out there in terms of your legal rights as a bedbug sufferer.
