My name is Jeff White and I'm the research entomologist for bedbug central and the host of bedbug TV, bedbugcentral.com. I have no idea how I got into bugs and bedbugs, and here I am six years later, and having a lot of fun working with bedbugs. And I'll be talking to you about pest control. You've probably seen bedbugs on the news, whether it's in movie theatres, public transportation vehicles, or in somebody's house. And you know bedbugs can be associated with hotel rooms and you're about to leave for a business travel or pleasure or whatever the case may be. And so what do you need to know to avoid bedbugs in a hotel? It's obviously a concern and there are some precautions you can take to avoid bringing bugs back with you. Now when you're getting ready to leave for your trip, make sure you put bags inside of your suitcase. That way you can separate your clothes into launderable piles before you leave the hotel room. Another good thing to bring with you is a flashlight. You're going to want to conduct a quick inspection of that hotel room, before you actually stay in the hotel. And so pack a flashlight and some bags, and you're off on your travels. And so you arrive in your hotel and, obviously, does the room have bugs? Be aware that there's always a chance that you could encounter bedbugs, whether it's a one-star hotel or a five-star hotel. Bedbugs do not associate through filth or through, you know, uh a cheaper hotel versus a more expensive hotel. And so you wanna take the same precautions every time. So you're in your hotel ??? do a quick inspection of the bed. Look at the headboard. Look around the bed. See if you see any obvious signs of bugs. And you're doing that to avoid staying in a problem room; a really bad infestation. But remember, no matter how good you are, if I went into that hotel room, you could easily miss a couple bugs. And so, more importantly, you wanna make sure you don't bring them home with you. You wanna take your suitcase, and you wanna store it, while you're staying in the hotel room, away from the bed. The bathtub is a place that a lot of people use to keep bugs off of that suitcase. And so then what you're gonna do, is, as you're getting ready to leave, you wanna separate your clothes into launderable piles. Put the darks in one bag, the lights in another bag, that way, when you return home, you can just quickly launder those in a hot wash, and/or a hot dry cycle. And now in terms of your suitcase, you wanna make sure you do your research. There's a couple different ways to handle a suitcase. You could bag it up, and leave it until you travel again. There's portable heating devices that you can buy that you can put it in, and basically a dryer, without the tumble, or you could potentially treat it as well. Again, just do research on the suitcase, and remember that you have to bring bugs into the house in order to get them, they come from one infested environment to another. So if you're taking these simple precautions, you can avoid bringing bugs back from a hotel room you've recently stayed in.
