Hi, my name is Josh Kallenberg and I'm here at the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California. I've been flying professionally for about 13 years, and now I have the pleasure of flying this Gulfstream G450 which is a lot of fun and exciting. And today I'm going to talk to you about becoming a pilot. And should you go and attend a formalized ground school or perhaps an at home study program, depending on which track you're on if you're doing it as a hobby, or as for a career, you have some options. If you're doing it as a hobby, you can do an at home program, which is more relaxed, where you do at home study and then when you have questions you bring them up with your instructor when you have a meeting or a flight lesson. The other option is to go to a ground school, sometimes they have a formal ground school at your flight school. It's a structured class, and I really think it's valuable, I think because you can ask questions right then and there, if there's questions you didn't think of or afraid to ask maybe somebody else will ask them, it's a group environment, it's just a better way to learn the material. Ground study is the book studying of the training, as opposed to the flight training, you need to learn the concepts and material before you go up there, so when you're actually flying you'll recognize what you've read in class. Some of the subjects you're going to learn when you're in ground school are aerodynamics, communications, the navigation, some of the principles of how to fly a plane, all things you're going to experience when you actually go ahead and go up there and do it.
