Student Life

Pamplin has a “great facility, small class sizes,” and a diverse student body that “is very professional and we are all in the same situation. We balance work, school, family, and friends.” Students “tend to be younger than 30,” have “3-5 years work experience at best,” and are “career minded but not uptight.” Many have careers in addition to school, which “makes relating easy,” and the numerous nationalities of the student body beneficially “increases the world view of the program, as we are obviously moving towards a more world-based economy.” Most of the students “like discussion and analysis,” so one can learn “a lot of things not only from lecture, but [also from] my fellow students.” Students work “in an incredibly tight cohort” and are “very, very supportive of one another's opinions and experiences.” The unique culture of the Pacific Northwest is reassuring to all who go here since many are regional locals, and the “gorgeous scenery” has more than a few fans. The UP campus itself “is breathtaking” and offers many “nice” transportation options.

Career

Pamplin has an excellent “reputation against other schools locally,” so those who are looking for jobs within the area have a leg up. Many people here are getting degrees for advancement in their current jobs, but the school does a good job of recruiting for the handful that are looking. “If you are young [and] under 30...it's a good program because that is the age bracket that the recruiting companies pursue” at Pamplin. Since admission is rolling, students can begin immediately following their acceptance in the fall, spring, or summer, which is a huge advantage to working students.

Students Say

The Pamplin School of Business Administration at the University of Portland features some of the Pacific Northwest’s top-notch faculty and a curriculum “integrating professional experience into academic concepts.” The program administrator has made this “wonderfully run” program “extremely easy to do while working,” as many do, and the university even offers some tuition discounts to those who are seeking Nonprofit Management degrees (a notable program here), as well as scholarships for international students. The school is part of JEBNET, Jesuit Education in Business Network, which is a network of 30 AACSB-accredited universities nationwide that share similarly “strong mission statements” and provide students the ability to transfer credits and complete their MBA at another university. The “good atmosphere within the classroom” is built on the foundation of “some of the most engaged professors I have had,” according to one student. They “seem to really enjoy what they are teaching and a majority do a great job engaging students,” and “are just as invested in your academic and career advancement” as the individual themselves. “Most of [the] professors treat me as their family or friends, and I've learned a lot of practical things from my school,” says a student. Varied experiential backgrounds help instructors to provide a well-rounded curriculum. The school’s Catholic ties result in “an ideals driven environment,” one that also happens to be “understanding of students working while attending classes.” Most of the students are able to “work with professors one on one” outside of class. “The staff is amazing and the professors are intense, but it's an MBA program, so what'd you expect?!” says one happy student.
