The Admissions Office considers all the following factors: academic record, including cumulative grade point average; area of concentration; balance of electives and trend of grades; GMAT scores; work experience (two or more years strongly recommended); evidence of leadership ability; two letters of refer...The Kelley MBA program is highly selective. The Admissions Office considers all the following factors: academic record, including cumulative grade point average; area of concentration; balance of electives and trend of grades; GMAT scores; work experience (two or more years strongly recommended); evidence of leadership ability; two letters of reference; and personal essays. Successful applicants need not have majored in business as undergraduates but should understand algebra and statistics and have some facility with spreadsheets. Calculus is important for some majors. Kelley has four separate application deadlines, with separate screening for each batch of applicants. In general, your chances are better if you apply early; however, it is better to wait for a later deadline if doing so will improve your application. Those seeking merit scholarships should try to apply by the January 5th deadline

Student Life

If you want an opportunity to slow down, you won’t get it here. “Life at the Kelley School is very busy, but it is very gratifying because you are able to apply what you’re learning to projects that the professors have spent time developing.” Students here tend to be “busy with lot of learning,” but expect “inclusion and collaboration” rather than classmates who only look out for themselves. “Graduate school is difficult enough with­out having a cut-throat culture or a miserable environment. The Kelley environment sup­ports students to achieve and to help one another.” Just be ready to remain motivated. “The pace is fast, and you feel like a slacker if you are not actively involved with activi­ties and projects keeping you busy all the time. It’s a great environment for staying sharp and competitive.” That is not to say there aren’t opportunities for fun. “Bloomington offers a lot for a small­er town - great restaurants, museums and shows. At the same time, things are easy to get to and relatively cheap, which is a great combination for a busy student.” You’ll be on your feet most of the time, as students “often walk to school, walk to the gym and walk to go out,” but that only serves to enhance the “one big family” atmosphere at Kelley. If you don’t want to hit the town, “there are many clubs and groups for different interest groups which are all student-led under the student-elected MBA Association,” as well as “many weekend social/networking opportunities.”

Career

The Academy structure at Kelley “leads to better interview preparation and therefore more companies being interested in coming to campus.” Couple that with the “broad Hoosier network” and a “top marketing program with fantastic companies coming on campus” and it’s easy to see why Kelley has “unrivaled exposure to best-in-class CPG companies (Kraft, General Mills, P&G, Nestle, ConAgra).” Add to that a “strong entre­preneurship program and international experience opportunities,” as well as faculty who will “bend over backwards to help you land that job/internship,” and opportuni­ties abound. Students don’t need to rely solely on the faculty, either. They can also rely on one another. “Many students find internships and full time offers because their class­mates helped them make the right connections.” The biggest recruiters of students here include Cummins, Deloitte, 3M, Ernst & Young, and General Electric, and those MBAs went on to a wide range of positions: In 2011, about one-fifth wound up in consumer products; 13 percent took positions in technolo­gy; 18 percent were in manufacturing; 13 percent found financial services gigs; and 18 percent were hired for consulting.

An administration that is “extremely student-focused and works hard to enhance (their) experience” is a hallmark of Indiana University—Bloomington’s Kelley School of Business. This “well run” school “responds very quickly to the problems of students,” with an administration and educators who “do all that they can to enhance students’ experiences.” While some students call the administration at the parent school, IU, “out of touch,” the administrators at Kelley are “on par with any top ten program.”Part of that comes from teachers who are “are incredible at making textbook problems become real-world applicable.” The “incredibly qualified and smart” professors “are passionate about making our experience a positive one.” There is no question that “aca­demics are taken seriously at Kelley. Professors care about students learning—not just about grades, but understanding concepts.” The “rigorous curriculum” here “prepares a student to compete with the best,” key to helping students “grow personally and profes­sionally.” Faculty recognize that the world of business is not a solo sport, and the educa­tion here reflects that. “Students become very dynamic in team settings because of it.”Students here will begin with an integrated fifteen-week core curriculum before plung­ing into an education that will ask you to “continuously strive to keep up with change and improvement.” Even with challenging academics, few students will find roadblocks at Kelley, in large part thanks to the “excellent faculty” being on hand to help. “The administration and faculty of the Kelley School are second to none. Any administration issues are dealt with quickly and the professors are very interested in preparing you for success by making themselves available after class.”
