What are the top 3 things that students do for fun at Western Michigan University?

Answers

Anonymous, extreemly poor quality education at wmu

Never ever attend Western Michigan University as an American or an international student. This school is of extremely low quality and yet is terribly expensive. Its buildings are dilapidated, its faculty and staff speak very very poor English and are not even competent in their specialty subjects. Compared to other mid tier universities in USA, WMU, located in Kalamazoo, MI is by far the most expensive; the cost of attendance to both in-state and out of state students is comparable to those of schools like New York University, UCLA, Columbia, Harvey Mudd College, MIT, Boston University and even the elite top of the tier1 private universities and colleges. As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be a rain of daily fees added to your account. Looking at what really you would be paying for is comparable to searching for a needle in a stack of hay. In addition to very hefty tuition fees, you pay for everything you come across; car parkings, washing machines, gym rooms, medical bills (despite having a separately paid insurance), snow clearance fees and many many others. I would not be suprized to learn that wmu now charges students for breathing and walking inside campus. Inside dilapidated wmu campus buildings are sub standards walls, ablutions, very old furniture, torn books. In the laboratories you find stone age scientific and engineering equipment not anywhere close in quality to those in universities in third world countries. It is simply unthinkable to believe that this university is located inside the United States. The school is saturated with low quality teaching assistants, who speak very very limited English, they are simply rubbish. Halls of residence are too costly to live in and yet they are deteriorated, showers are falling, baths are rusty and floor tiles are coming off the floor. It’s the same thing inside the apartment blocks,

The fees for dining and campus meals at wmu shoot through the roof; even celebrities like Cobi Jones, Britney Speaks, Serena Williams, Lionel Messi would complain about the high cost. As you spend your daily live interacting with fellow students on and off the classroom you come across conversations of complaints about the poor quality and an unjustified high cost of attendance. WMU is not even ranked among the top 150 universities in terms of academic excellence in USA, but the cost of attendance is easily among the top 10. Would you say it is wise to apply for admission in this school? Think otherwise, research very carefully, look for better schools with reasonable cost of attendance and a better quality of education. The students at Western Michigan University are very involved in the registered student organizations (RSO), ranking at the top thing students do for fun. Being a part of an RSO includes meeting amazing people with similar interests being involved in community service events or helping others achieve academic success. The second most fun thing students do is go on walks to the local Den Party Store to get 60 cent den pops where you mix and match any soda pop, blue and red powerade, or vitamin water your heart desires. The third thing students do for fun is riding the bus around campus to people watch and view our beautiful campus. Maybe that is just me and my best friend Becca when we have a break between class to let our minds rest, but it is still a good time.

Many students enjoy going to the college hockey games. The atmosphere is full of energy and Western has one of the most involved student sections for hockey. Lastly, students work with the Kalamazoo community. The city helped pay for the college, so students are very involved in the community.

Being part of a fairly-sized and diverse state university, you tend to see a lot of different interests in your fellow students. One event I think people enjoy taking part of is a home football game. This gives us a chance to show how proud we are to be part of this institution through loud cheers and raw emotion. Another thing people at WMU enjoy is recreational activities such as running, swimming, weight lifting, etc. But then, there are people who enjoy taking in a traveling national stage artist in town putting on a show at our own Miller Auditorium.

Tailgating and parties are frequent events to be observed on campus along with the Bronco basketball team support on football off-season. There are also many random events that occur around campus that are cause for large amounts of admissions. For instance, the Zombies vs. Humans events is a big event in which students team up against each other as either zombies or humans with Nerf guns and shoot each other out of the game. This is a semi-annual event that is very anticipated every 6 months.

  1. Visit downtown Kalamazoo! Not only is Western Michigan University full of different opportunities for students as far as Registered Student Organizations, Campus Activities Board events, and sporting events, but it is located in the heart of Kalamazoo, MI. Kalamazoo firstly has the coolest name of any city ever. Secondly, it is a purebred college town, with one major university, one private college, and one community college in the county. What does that mean? Endless activities for college-age students: live music, a hugely arts-centered community, trendy restaurants at college-kid prices, a movie theatre with a full bar and restaurant service WHILE YOU ARE WATCHING THE MOVIE (maybe that's old news for some people...but I'm obsessed), as well as an active young adult community in the political and social avenues of the city. There are countless ways to stay engaged, invested, and having fun while completing your college education at Western Michigan University

  2. Chill at Goldsworth Valley Pond. Being in Michigan, we have access to some body of water within a five mile radius of wherever we stand. WMU is no exception to that, with our own pond right on campus. Not interested in hitting the town? Pack a lunch from one of our cafes or dining halls, and have a picnic in the grassy fields around the pond. Afterward, go across the street, grab a Den Pop (enormous 32 or 40 oz pops for less than a dollar) and jump into whatever game is happening on the WMU Intramural fields. A nice, relaxing activity to combat the stress of classes and other obligations.

  3. Sled down the many hills all over WMU's campus on lunch trays during the winter. Our winters are cold and SNOWY, so there is plenty of sledding potential. Our dining halls no longer use the lunch trays due to sustainability purposes, but they keep them as options in the back just in case. You may need to find a way to sneak some lunch trays out (whatever it wasn't me a friend did it), but they make the best lunch trays a Bronco could ask for. Follow your sledding day up with some free hot chocolate from the Lee Honors College kitchen, and enjoy your winter weather at WMU!

I believe that WMU students enjoy going to school-related special events. We have a large amount of extracurricular events that bring in authors, business advocates, and other important people from around the world to share the success they have had in their field. Since WMU is located in one of the most prominent brewing cities in Michigan, trying out new and local breweries is a frequent past-time for students at WMU as well. There are also several options for theatre and cinema entertainment in Kalamazoo and students love to go out to see a good film.

Anonymous, Student, Western Michigan University, Class of 2015

Broncos most definitely make it a priority to attend Bronco Bash at the beginning of the fall semester. Lots of free stuff and shirts from on-campus and local organizations and businesses. In the Spring semester we have an International festival where students from different cultures get to share traditional dishes and performances. True broncos also make sure to attend hockey games, since hockey is our schools most excelled sport.

Picking only three things that we do to have fun at WMU is very tough, but the top three things, at least according to me, would be: 1. Attending sporting events: Whether it be football, basketball or hockey; going to a Western Michigan Broncos game is always a great time. The student section is always full of great energy and is a great place to meet new friends. With our head football coach's slogan "Row the Boat" and the milestone event of Western making it to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl last year, the first time we've ever gone, Western sporting events can only get higher energy and more fun next year.

  1. Joining a club such as ZvH: what college student wouldn't like the chance to run around campus shooting people with Nerf guns? Well that's the point of Zombies versus Humans. A few people start off as zombies and gradually grow their numbers by tagging the non-infected, who are armed with Nerf guns. both groups try to accomplish certain challenges every night for a week until either everyone is a zombie, or some of the humans escape. But at its heart, I mean, Nerf guns; what else is there to say to convince someone?

  2. Hanging out with friends: As a freshmen, it was a real shock after being with the same kids for 13 years in public school to knowing virtually no one at college. However, at Western, so many people are friendly and nice, it is virtually impossible to not make friends here. You can sit down at lunch with total strangers and be friends and laughing like you've been friends for years by the end of the meal. And what I've discovered is that here, without all of the baggage of people who've known you your whole life, you can act so silly and have it be acceptable. So many childhood things have become relevant again, like Mario Kart tournaments, Spongebob references, and long discussions about old cartoons that many people loved but forgot about. And at the end of the day at Western, it's nice knowing that there are so many people here who consider you a friend and enjoy spending time with you.

Anonymous, Student, Western Michigan University, Class of 2017

The top thing that my friends at school and I do is work out at the student recreation center. There is a lot of space for running around campus, as well as good locally owned coffee shops.

Anonymous, Student, Western Michigan University, Class of 2017

First and foremost, Western Michigan Broncos love to row the boat. It is a way of life throughout the first semester of school. Rowing the boat is a saying introduced to us by our football coach, and it echoes trough Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoons. Secondly, we pride ourselves on being called Lawson Lunatics. This is the name of our student section at hockey games. Just last year, we were ranked in the top 10 hockey student sections in the country. Lastly, students find fun in everything they do on campus. There is no top three. Being a Bronco means you can find the fun in every situation, including studying for mid-terms in Waldo Library at 2 a.m. Our University provides many outlets for our diverse student population to network and have fun. I wouldn't be doing justice to this great University if I narrowed the fun our students have to 3 things.

-Bronco Bash -Engage in recreational sporting activity at the recreation center -Participate in extracurricular activities

I'm in Sigma Kappa sorority and we do many things such as study nights with other sororities, numerous sisterhood events/retreats, and volunteer in and around the community. There's also many parks and walking/biking trails around the Kalamazoo area where people like to take walks or bike ride when the weather is nice.

The engineering students like to design various vehicles for competitions. Our solar, baja and formula teams always bring tough competition. Our humanities based majors enjoy spending their time socializing. Potentially the most hard working majors, the music and performing arts majors, like to spend their time practicing.

Students go to numerous sporting events, including hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, etc. Students go to Miller Auditorium to see Miller movies that are viewed every once in a while. Many students also like to workout at the Student Recreation Center

The top three things students do are go to the Student Recreation Center (SRC), join one of the multiple and diverse student organizations, or attend events happening around campus.

1.) Kalamazoo is absolutely beautiful. There are many parks and nature centers in the area. When we aren't in the middle of a winter snow storm, many students will take walks, have a picnic, or ride their bikes. 2.) Downtown Kalamazoo has many different activities to do. They have a lot of coffee shops where students will go to study, yoga and rock climbing classes, theres many festivals throughout the year, museums, and a variety of unique restaurants. 3.) Getting involved is also a fun to do at WMU. I'm involved in Greek life, Alpha Chi Omega, and we do community service events, have game night with other fraternities and sororities, sisterhood events, and participate in greek week each year! I'm also involved in APICS which correlates with my integrated supply management major. This organization helps me develop with other companies and I get to experience what I will be doing in my future career!

  1. Go out to the bar/house parties with friends; the city is full of classy pubs and thumping dance clubs.
  2. Western Wednesdays are a big thing on campus, there are usually free giveaways and cool clubs to join/causes to learn about and get involved with.
  3. STUDY! The library is always packed to the gills and it's hard to find a seat and a quiet place to work.

Not in a specific order, but I most definitely think that the football games...or really any sporting event is a great experience at Western. We always show much pride we have for our school at every game! I'd also think that Miller Movie Nights presented by CAB are super great and super fun. If they're not free they're only a dollar and I just think that's great for movie lovers on a budget. They usually supply free popcorn too! And lastly probably grabbing a den pop and eating an insomnia cookie would be one of the best things Western students do. Den pops are giant and cheap and insomnia cookies are always fresh baked. I don't think anything gets better than that.

Most students enjoy partying, to be completely honest. However, our sports teams have a wonderful following, from the Lawson Lunatics to the power of Row the Boat. Also, students seem to enjoy exploring the different activities Kalamazoo has to offer.

They go to parties, hang out with friends, and watch television. Some students do this all week long or just on the weekends. I prefer to knit something or read a novel. I like to only hang out with a small group of people at a time. If you go to frat ville it is always hype on the weekends.

For fun, students like to be a part of their clubs, socialize with members of our diverse student body, and go to the amazing events that happen on and around campus, such as musicals and sporting events.
