The campus is very diverse if you are considering the ethnicity of the students. The age group seems to be 18 to 30 but there are some students below and over this age range.

A sooner is typically a diverse, well rounded and goal oriented pupil. One thing everyone possesses at this university is extreme pride. We are a large family and we look out for one another. The social diversity is outstanding and it is very easy to fit it. From day one the staff and leadership encourage you to have an opinion. They believe we are made stronger by exploration of alternative opinions. You are encouraged to discuss what you think and diversify yourself. They also encourage studying abroad to learn about different cultures.

The word 'typical' cannot apply to University of Oklahoma students. The diversity here is unlike anything I've ever encountered, especially in a relatively monocultured state such as Oklahoma. I've met people from Jamaica and people from Ireland. I've worked out with the muscleheads and I've crunched numbers with the brainiacs. Everyone has their own reason to be here, whether that be athletics, or technical skills, or their first step into business, or any of the other thousands upon thousands of possibilities. The only description for a 'typical' OU student is 'atypical'.

The University of Oklahoma has a saying that says "One Sooner Family." With that being said, a person does not have to be related, have the same hair, religion, ethnicity, or aspirations to be a part of a family. All students of different backgrounds are represented at the University of Oklahoma, therefore; there is no "typical student."

The University is large enough to offer ample opportunities for big events, service, and healthy social life, but student who prefer a smaller, more personalized setting are also able to find what they are looking for. There is no such thing as an "OU Student" because OU offers something for everyone.

The typical student is your average, first or second year undergrad right out of high school. Many are still wearing the trends that were cool then, baggy tee-shirt and jeans. Some go the professional route and suit up for class. Once you get to the senior undergrads it becomes more casual or even sweats with no makeup. It becomes more obvious who is in a relationship based on what they wear to class, guys and girls. People in relationships tend to go the casual styles and people looking for relationships look sharp.

Although each student I have met at OU is different and offers a wide array of experiences and insights, the most common factor these students have is their insatiable desire for learning new concepts, gaining insights and understanding, and bettering themselves as well as their community. The type of student that attends OU should be bright and willing to acknowledge that communication with staff and students is essential in gaining understanding.

Motivated to learn and open to different points of view. The professors may not always agree with what your thesis may state; however, they are always open to debate and do not pontificate. I find that this learning experience is exceptionally helpful in expanding the students mind and increasing their ability to defend their points of view. It also allows them to expand their views.

I don't believe that there is a particular person that should attend OU. I believe that schools should be diverse and give you an opportunity to meet new people who are different from you. However, at OU that really isnt the case. OU is a predominantly white institution so whites make up an overwhelming number of the student population. However, I do believe the type of person who should attend OU should be hardworking, determined and ready to succeed.

People who like sports would definitely like OU. Those who are looking for the resources of a large research university but also want individualized, personal attention find both at the university. Most people recognize OU for its athletic reputation, but the academics are also excellent--there are more National Merit Scholars at OU than at any other public university, and many professors are nationally and internationally recognized for their contributions in their respective fields. There is definitely a sense of community at OU, so a student looking for a strong family of peers should definitely check out OU.
