Cheer leading, basketball and football: Bright lights illuminate the field, and the cheers of the crowd fill the air, welcoming us. It's kickoff time and I'm ready for a great game. However my role on the field is not that of a player, but a cheerleader, a role that has given me more than I could have ever imagined. I’ve learned from cheer leading that no matter what happens, a team is a team and if you cultivate a strong bond with each other, anything can be achieved. As varsity captain, I am in charge of leading our squad that is now composed of mostly first time cheerleaders. One of my main tasks has been to eradicate the preconceived notions these girls had about the sport. Some believed it would be easy, not realizing the actual physical demands of the sport. Others thought it centered around the "cute" uniforms. But cheerleading is about working together and understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses.
