Students also like to visit downtown Santa Barbara, which is about a 25 minute drive from campus. The university offers bus passes to all students. The bus travels to downtown Santa Barbara, as well as other places around Goleta. The best part about being a student at UCSB is living in the college town right next to campus called Isla Vista or "IV." IV is a very strong and kind community of students and families that makes a student like me feel at home. IV is a place full of students from UCSB, and well at SBCC, the Santa Barbara community college. IV is one of the best places to live as a college student because it brings a loving community, an ideal college town, and a place to live with all of the friends you meet in college.
At UCSB a lot of students go to various club or AS hosted events like dog therapy during midterms or free concerts. The beach is also a popular study and hang out area where many students spend between classes or on the weekends. Downtown Santa Barbara is also a fun relaxing area to shop and eat.

In Santa Barbara there are a hundred ways to keep yourself entertained when you're not busy studying. The top activities that make the list are going to the lovely beaches nearby, shop on beautiful State Street, and party!
For many students, it's as simple as taking a bike ride or skateboard down to the end of the street; there you will be able to find the beautiful scenery that is known as Del Playa. Once there, you catch the crisp breeze that comes from the rippling tides of the bright blue ocean. Sun screen and beach towels are a must, since the California sun is almost always at its peak here in Santa Barabara. Along with the scenery, there is never a bad time to go to the beach, whether its to watch the sunrise with some friends that you've met during the school year, or to watch the sunset with someone on your first date. Whether you're taking a study break and want to take a walk down the beach's fine sand, or to make it part of your work out routine, the beach is always a good place to go anytime.
Aside from the beautiful ocean side view, the small town that fosters the students here always offers the opportunity for a place to go to and grab a bite to eat from a number of restaurants. Isla Vista (I.V.), the small community that shelters Santa Barbara's student body, has created a surprising entity of close knit friendships along with the interesting tastes and smells that emanate from the kitchens that provide for its students here. Here we have the popular smoothie joint, Blenders, an ever-busy Mexican grill, Free Birds World Burrito, an ice cream parlor that closes until midnight, I.V. Drip, and the non-stop business of pizza delivery that everyone never gets tired of, Pizza Hut, and so many more places that are nearby. Restaurants aside, there are also bars a walk away where friends can enjoy a couple beers, play pool, listen to some alternative rock music, and retreat to the restaurants of I.V. once the night is over.
The cultivating community has not only created an environment for joy and understanding of different people from different places of the world, but has also created a community where people can share similar interests and be able to speak freely and enthusiastically among other students who share the same interests. A small community of students have created a club where other like-minded students can come in almost every week and talk about video games and video game tournaments. Here we find students from different areas of expertise. Every week these groups of students come together to play a video game known as Super Smash Bros. Melee. Not only has this created an environment where it brings competition and strategy into the mix, but it also allows players from different parts of the world to bond together among other fellow players and forget about the stresses of school, work, financial issues, or any other issues for that matter. It creates a catharsis to release pent up energy that couldn't otherwise be managed any other way. With a club that only houses a few 40 or so, this club creates an ambiance that anyone would enjoy among students, opponents, and possibly future friends.
