There are plenty of free ways to check your credit rating. You are entitled to one free credit rating per year. AnnualCreditReport.com offers this service.
If you have online banking through certain providers, such as Wells Fargo, they might provide a free rating as well.
However, if it is of upmost importance to get a score valid, your best bet is go to FICO, or the Fair Isaac Corporation. This is the score most lenders use, and it is the 'gold standard' if you want to see whether you'll be approved for borrowing money for a down payment on a house or some other large purchase.
