New Lang Students should:

  1. Be interested in learning and living in New York City.
Hampshire is a better buy for actual contact with professors, and being in a tight knit student community. Lang offers left of center Liberal Arts education in the city.

  2. Be self motivated. If you are already aware of your passions, or willing to become passionate about something, its a good place to be.

  3. You know be aware that unless you've been given free housing, or can afford to live in Manhattan, you will be living 35-60 minutes from school, in one of the outer boroughs. Its a commuter school in a way that makes your college years more like the regular old real world. I wanted that, but not everyone does.

  4. Be prepared to live in debt. Our country likes to fund war toys, not education.

I taught a course at Lang a couple years back, and was happy to see the group of students was engaged, smart, and independent.

I think when you are newcomer to a new school, first thing to do would be to find new friends and study very well, not to have problems with late submissions. I remember when I change schools I started studying very hard when I had no friends at first and do my paper for me on time, I was scared to be expelled.

My school is often known for having hipsters attend it, this is very true. I only have one friend at the school, and only really hangout with that one person, so I don't talk to my fellow students. Ergo, I am not entirely sure what they are like, on a deeper level at least. However, from what I can see they are all very socially aware, and outspoken people. They always seem to be talking about events that are going on around the world, and discussing what we should do about it. I would classify them as nice enough people, and all of them are different in their own way. This is to be expected of course, the school is highly diverse, and have many different races and ethnicities attending the university. I guess this would mean there is no "typical" student at my college, but they all have the same aura about them. Nice enough people who care greatly for world occurrences.

Everyone is very different, especially because there are so many different schools under the New School. Some students that attend Parsons are artsy and fashionable. Other students are poetic and analytical. But all the students are interesting.

A person who attends The New School must have a great amount of confidence in themselves in order to "survive" in the school. There is competition everywhere a person looks, but in order to be successful, one must admit that they must work harder than their very best.

Typical is a bad word, most students are creative and progressive. The person who attends should be prepared to work hard and be dedicated to the growth of their art.

The New School is broken into smaller "focus" schools, mine being Parsons School of Design. There you'll meet people from all around the world who have a unique fashion sense (it is a renown fashion school), not too shy about getting their hands dirty, and showing their creative side among piers. Many people speak more than one language, and is their first time living abroad. If you have ever felt you were too big for your small town, Parsons will give you every opportunity to invent yourself!

The New School is open to all creatives ready to explore like in New York. There are endless opportunities at five different schools for anyone interested in art, design, or social research. We have a large community and the perfect location for networking and intern opportunities. As a student you must be hardworking. We are not the typical college campus and students are expected to be ready to work. We are challenge in and outside the classroom.

The New School does not have a typical student that should attend. Being one of the top schools to have the most international student explains how diverse and open minded New School students are. Traveling thousands of miles away or even walking down the street from where they grew up. All New School students have the passion to learn and grow as a person in such a diverse and large city.

I hate to put the "typical New School student" into a box or place a label on them. As a New School student, we strive to accept diversity. We are a group of students that are all in the same place, wanting the same thing, and that is to create something innovative and new.

I am in the unique position of being an Applied Associate student at Parsons, therefore my perspective of the typical student is not necessarily a great representation of the undergraduate student body. To me the typical AAS Parsons student is a adult who has made a lot of personal and financial sacrifices to pursue their true passion in arts after already establishing themselves in a different field. These students are serious and passionate about their studies, and do not take anything for granted. I think on a whole it would be difficult to pigeonhole any Parsons student because we are artists and designers, all pulling from our diverse backgrounds.

The New School student is hard to characterize because there is no typical type. Sure, the jazz students seem to either dress like a graphic designer or a hippie, and yes, the design kids seem all the same sometimes. But, we're all so different amongst ourselves. The general public may categorize the New School type to be one that is alternative in the sense that not only do we choose an alternative college experience, but it translates in our personal style, the music we listen to, etc. This doesn't mean that every student is necessarily liberal (as one would expect an "alternative" life style to be related to). This doesn't mean that every New School student knows what they want in life and what they're rallying for. But, a New School student does look for more in life. Though we are all different, no one is your typical type. There is always some specific interest or passion that drives us and causes us to take a risk, and that's the common thread between us all. It's that same thread that draws the line between our students and any other university's student body.

It is a creative person who is open to learn as much as possible about other cultures, other languages. Since I am in Mannes school of music belonging to the new school, ut is all about learning the language of different composers frm various nations. It couldn't be a better training than to actually be with young people from different nations and get to know their cultures!
