Noah Mayers, Graduate and former teacher at Eugene Lang
New Lang Students should:
Be interested in learning and living in New York City.
Hampshire is a better buy for actual contact with professors, and being in a tight knit student community. Lang offers left of center Liberal Arts education in the city.
Be self motivated. If you are already aware of your passions, or willing to become passionate about something, its a good place to be.
You know be aware that unless you've been given free housing, or can afford to live in Manhattan, you will be living 35-60 minutes from school, in one of the outer boroughs. Its a commuter school in a way that makes your college years more like the regular old real world. I wanted that, but not everyone does.
Be prepared to live in debt. Our country likes to fund war toys, not education.
I taught a course at Lang a couple years back, and was happy to see the group of students was engaged, smart, and independent.
