The typical UC Santa Cruz college student is laid back but is academically focused. There is not a lot of stress as in other colleges and if a student is under stress they can walk out their front door and take a nice relaxing walk. Everyone at the university is really nice and friendly. They make freshman feel welcome by walking you to class if you are lost and can't find your class. UC Santa Cruz is a great place to get an education and meet the nicest people.

I'd say our typical student is one who isn't trying to adhere to any sort of norm, usually just trying to be themselves and are extremely happy to find where they belong while doing so. It's really a place where anyone can go and make friends, no one tries to "fit in", everyone regardless of their background can go and achieve. Everyday I'm amazed by our diverse student body. For example, it's a beautiful thing when a gifted Nigerian student can come all the way to the United States and teach a classroom/lab - as a student! Most places I know would snicker and scoff at the thought of having to learn from someone who can't speak perfect english. It's an amazing place.

A UCSC student is encouraged to keep an open mind when interacting with our diverse student population. We are specifically informed at freshman ceremonies that each student has the power to have an opinion and that opinion matter. Also, when entering as a freshman, many students (as well as myself) felt overwhelmed (in a good way) by the welcoming atmosphere by orientation leaders on our campus. Everyone was ready with a smile and an attitude to help anyone needed. That attitude has not diminished even after the orientation. Furthermore, we have clubs and classes that challenge the views of organizations whose actions contradict their purpose. Open-minded, welcoming yet critical of their environment is the type of student that is developed at UCSC.

2 You have the (usually dread-locked) hippie/surfer/stoner student that is also there of the amazing education that Santa Cruz has to offer.

Most people I have encountered have a deep sense of social consciousness in some way. This involves issues relating to gender rights, the environment, race, and war. The knowledge that many students have in these and various other social issues is what makes this campus so tolerant toward perspectives that may be deemed as taboo or radical. You wake up and go eat at the dining hall, and go to class. You will find yourself climbing up and down hills and often see deer along the way to your class. If you are lucky you may see a turkey as well. You can go to McHenry Library for some quiet study time or visit your lounge. You might take a nap too.

A UCSC student is different in every manner than any other student. We all are diverse, and it's difficult to simply generalize us all, or characterize us all in one manner or another! But to try, I'd say a typical Fighting Slug is a friendly, open-minded, adventurous and enthusiastic person that is up for any fun! The type of person that should attend UCSC is someone that is friendly as well, but practically anyone should attend UCSC since our school and our environment/culture accepts anyone and everyone from any background or what have it! UCSC is a great place for practically anyone who wants to learn, grow, and explore while enriching themselves academically.

Typically students at the UC Santa Cruz are environmentally conscious, it is reflected on their wardrobe; eco-shirts, hiking boots or bare feet, tattered sweatshirt, messy hair. Out of all the UC's, ours is home to the most diverse population, but sadly white is still the majority. So the typical student at UCSC is a white hippy.

They could either be extremely welcoming and talkative, or extremely studious and prefer to not talk at all. Honestly, i believe we are all our own person, with our own identity for a reason. Therefore, what separates us from each other, despite the fact that we enjoy doing some of the same activities together, is what brings the happy communities of UCSC together. There is no certain type in my opinion.
