3x+y=0 5x-y=8 I came up with x=0.4 y=1.2 but I was wrong... Can -3x=-y and it could be substituted as 5x-(-3x)=8?

Looks like you have a negative wrong. From 3x+y=0, moving the y over to the other side, you should get 3x= -y rather than -3x=-y. Then you do the substitution to find the other variable. Hope this helps!
