Tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) were established (and are operated) by American Indian tribes to educate Native people and preserve Native culture, languages and traditions. There are 34 accredited TCUs that are located on or near Indian reservations and serve over 30,000 students.
Tribal colleges and universities are competitive and must meet the same academic standards as other institutions of higher learning. For example, according to the American Indian College Fund, “Leech Lake Tribal College was ranked by Washington Monthly as the seventh of ‘America’s 50 Best Community Colleges’ in 2010. It was one of two TCUs to earn this recognition” (American Indian College Fund).
Students do not have to be Native American to attend a TCU.
