UCSC is located within the redwood trees which sometimes makes walking to class feel like a hiking trip. One will always see a deer while walking around or outside a dorm window. The ten colleges are a community that help students make connections with other students and faculty. These colleges assist first years with any questions about enrollment, financial aid, or class locations. Although a student may move off campus, one remains affiliated with a college and continues to be apart of that community. Most professors are passionate about their research which is expressed during lectures. The environment feels comfortable and helps a sleep deprived student focus on the material.

Because you didn't get into Berkeley, or because you're going for one of the few degrees that aren't offered anywhere else in the UC system.

1) Part of Lost boys was filmed here 2) This UC is NOT dominated by sports, which is unique and actually really great if you want to major in something art-related 3) This school is very liberal- if you want to be a certain way, go for it. This school is very open minded and you will find anyone and everyone here. You will fit in with at least ten like minded individuals of your kind.

Anonymous, Student, University of California-Santa Cruz, Class of 2016

The first reason should be the campus, the campus is just absolutely gorgeous. The sense of community is also really great at UCSC. As a transfer student the adjustment was a bit difficult but the transfer community at this campus is amazing. If you want to gain hands on experience in research UCSC is the place to be. Many labs like to recruit undergraduate researchers and there are many opportunities to get into a lab.

UCSC is one of the top research universities. It is also in the top 50 universities for research in the states. UCSC also offers a variety of majors and minors that allows students to purse a degree in whatever field they wish . With that said, the location of UC Santa Cruz is in the middle of a state park/forest making it easy for outdoor-loving people to hike, run, or bike anytime of the day. UCSC is also about one mile away from multiple beaches which gives students the opportunity to take a break from stressful classes and enjoy nature. Personally because of how calm and quiet UCSC is, you have a lot of time to just sit and listen and that feeling cant really be found any where else.

Anonymous, Student, University of California-Santa Cruz, Class of 2018

There are a multitude of reasons why someone should attend UC Santa Cruz. One, UCSC is in the top 50 universities for research in the states, making it a serious candidate for students who are wanting to go into a research-based field. Two, the school offers a variety of majors and minors that allows students to purse a degree in whatever field they wish to. And third, the location. UC Santa Cruz is situated partly in Pogonip State Park, making it easy for outdoor-loving people to hike, run, or bike whenever they feel. Santa Cruz also has multiple beaches that give students the opportunity to take a break from stressful classes and enjoy nature.

Anonymous, Student, University of California-Santa Cruz, Class of 2018

The calm environment is definitely number one. Although there is always inevitable stress that comes along with finals, the tranquil redwood trees and serene atmosphere allows one to stop, take a breather, and feel at ease. UCSC was also rated one of the top most beautiful campuses in California and I can definitely attest to that! Another reason would be its resources. There's a plethora of resources in basically every facet of the campus and it never feels as though the students are trying to put each other down. Everyone is looking towards each other's success and pushing everyone forward. My third reason would be the opportunities. UCSC is known for being a very large research school so that allows students to venture out of their comfort zone and take part in a variety of research labs and internships, all while feeling like a small liberal arts school. After you pass your freshman GE's, the classrooms reduce to a much smaller size. It feels more intimate and like you're actually getting the attention you need and are PAYING for by the professors. Not to mention (once again), the large pool of resources that includes tutoring, cultural clubs, sports, and hobbie groups assuring that you will not get lost in the huge college population.

I decided to attend UC Santa Cruz when I toured it after being accepted. I fell in love with the campus, and the energy it radiates. Besides being an incredibly beautiful school, it has a great student body, where students are humble and easy-going, as well as really academically driven. They are nice and it is easy to make friends. I also love that it is a big university, which comes with many opportunities to meet new people and study diverse subjects, with a small liberal arts feel. The school is separated into colleges, which are essentially dorms. The colleges give students a sense of community in the big school.

  1. Beauty. The UCSC campus is nestled in forest land and meadows, with the tall trees providing comfort and a unique atmosphere everywhere you go. The city of Santa Cruz itself is just as lovely, with bright, open spaces and any beach you want within a 10-minute drive, or even walking distance. Downtown Santa Cruz offers not only shops and restaurants, but friendly and exciting people to meet.
  2. Resources. UCSC is one of the country's top research institutions, and offers a vast amount of resources for students who are passionate about their major. The tenured professors are mostly researchers who are extremely knowledgeable about their field and make it a priority to be available to students. Personally, I couldn't imagine studying my major with professors other than the fun, passionate ones I have met at UCSC.
  3. Experience. I am thoroughly convinced that there is no other town in the world quite like Santa Cruz, California. It has a unique and strong character that makes its way into the soul of each of its inhabitants. Any student would benefit from living in Santa Cruz for any period of time, even for the rest of their life.

I could say location, location, location but that would be cheating. Seriously though, number 1 reason is location. You have the beach and the forest, can't go wrong there. Number 2, the campus. And third reason, it's a great place to go if you want to get away from home for a bit.

There is a plethora of reasons why one may want to join the Banana Slug community at UC Santa Cruz. However, my personal top three are: calming, scenic views (perfect for studying outdoors in the quiet), extremely friendly student body, and plenty of academic research opportunity for undergraduates (especially for STEM field students, like me). The school has a small graduate student population, allowing its undergraduates to be focused upon much more significantly than most schools within the UC system and better preparing them for the remainder of their academic or non-academic careers come their post-graduation life.

Anonymous, Student, University of California-Santa Cruz, Class of 2019

Every restaurant caters to both meat lovers and vegans! The people here will capture your heart by their grace and warmth. My best friend today was the first person I spoke to in UCSC. Going backwards as number 3, students should attend UCSC to experience what it is like to be isolated from chain stores, such as Starbucks. Everything here is pretty much locally owned, and locally grown. Also, this place is great for vegetarians, because there will ALWAYS be a vegetarian meal. Second will be the weather and all other natural forces. It's magical to know that you are on top of a hill in the midst of a forest. The weather seems to be constantly nice for hiking, and the air is in such great condition for your lungs.
