Science, Mathematics and World Languages are taught incrementally with the goal of mastery of their recognized scope and sequences of instruction. Humanities courses, on the other hand, traverse the boundless fields of philosophy, history, ethics, aesthetics, social sciences, literature and fine and performing arts. Because of the wide context of inquiry involved, the humanities at Sparhawk are integrated thematically. Engagement in these classes requires the development of critical and creative thinking and communication skills. The quest for understanding is guided by essential questions cultivated from that development. Mathematics and the Sciences describe reality; they do not interpret it. They tell us what is. Humanities courses engage us qualitatively, and by allowing consideration of what might be, they enlighten our search for meaning.
