The Highland School's Full Profile

The Highland School says

We are a democratic school. Our daily social interactions provide the opportunity for individuals to learn. Children learn through experience - through following their interests, coming to terms with boundaries, and understanding the consequences of their actions. Our students develop confidence, independence, resourcefulness, self-motivation, and responsibility in a school community that values individual rights and the democratic process. Our students take advantage of our 500 acres of forests, fields, and streams, wireless Internet access, our library, gym, art, music, and other rooms. Highland students are constantly active in pursuing what they are interested in: whether that is a particular academic subject, a skill they are developing, or talent they naturally have. Our students have the space and time to really delve into their passions. Applying students must be twelve or under unless they have had prior experience at a democratic school.

Private schools, including parochial and boarding, are funded through tuition and fees. The cost varies from school to school, but most families pay tuition to attend them. Many private schools offer financial aid or discounts, so it's worthwhile to ask about these options.
