Overview

Vanguard School says

The Vanguard School provides comprehensive special education and clinical services with a unique focus on the individual child and his or her readiness for life. The Vanguard School has been an innovator in offering an integrated academic, social and daily living skills approach within a supportive environment where the ultimate goal is to have each student become an independent, functional and happy member of society.

Vanguard’s innovative PreK-12 and post-secondary education is a hallmark of the school’s “Learning-for-Life” philosophy, and has resulted in measurable success for graduates. The Vanguard School is a nonprofit, state-licensed, academic day school that is one of 34 Pennsylvania Approved Private Schools for Special Education, selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The Vanguard School is licensed to accept students with a Pennsylvania Department of Special Education exceptionality of autism, speech-language disorders, emotional disturbance and/or other health impairment (OHI). Students at The Vanguard School also may experience developmental disabilities, learning differences or social-emotional or behavioral difficulties.

Students may receive supportive services in speech-language, physical or occupational therapies, reading and group or individual counseling.

Curriculum

Curriculum and instruction at The Vanguard School and Vanguard Transition Center involve rigorous academic programs, enriching elective and classroom instruction and community-based experiences. Curricula are modified to set high expectations for all students, allowing them to generalize and apply skills acquired to real-world settings.

We endorse and utilize evidence-based special education practices to ensure the highest-quality academic experience possible. Each year, a Curriculum Task Force is assembled which includes staff, administrators and parents. Through a meticulous curriculum evaluation and development process, the Task Force identifies programs that meet the requirements of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP), meaning they are strongly supported by evidence from well-conducted research studies appropriate to the student population that comprises our programs. As these practices require a high level of instructional skill, training supports include teacher induction, professional development and pedagogical coaching.

Mission Statement

VFES prepares children and young adults with special needs to realize their potential as contributing members of the community.

Financial Aid Information

In most cases, a student is placed here by the school district and parent, with the school district of residence funding the full tuition costs for new placements. The district continues to pay the full tuition costs until such time when state funding becomes available. There is limited funding through the PA Department of Education (PDE), Bureau of Special Education. When state funding does become available for a district placement, The Vanguard School contacts the school district which then submits the appropriate paperwork to PDE. If PDE approves the funding, costs for school-age students placed at The Vanguard School are shared between the school district of residence and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A small percentage of parents have chosen to pay privately to place their child at The Vanguard School, in cases where state and district funding are unavailable.

Finance

Finance

Private schools, including parochial and boarding, are funded through tuition and fees. The cost varies from school to school, but most families pay tuition to attend them. Many private schools offer financial aid or discounts, so it's worthwhile to ask about these options.
