Glenwood Academy says

Glenwood Academy nurtures and educates at-risk children by inspiring excellence, building character and strengthening community. As a school community, we encourage children who have been entrusted to us to live, learn and grow through our network of educators, cottage families and volunteers. Together, we inspire students to engage their minds, pursue excellence and embrace the principle of giving back. Glenwood's community consists of a campus located in Glenwood, IL, serving 140 children ranging from ages8 to 18 from 60 cities and villages throughout the Greater Chicago and Fox Valley areas. Over 80% of our children live at or below the poverty line and 91% come from single parent households. The Crucial Needs Glenwood Fulfills for At-Risk Children Schools alone are not enough to make a difference in the life of an at-risk child. Glenwood's model integrates a rigorous academic and nurturing boarding program that teaches social and leadership skills in a structured and secure environment. - Physical and Emotional Safety: Providing Essential Childhood Needs - Children have a safe learning and living environment that insures their basic needs of food, housing, nurturing and stability are met, which allows children to stay focused on succeeding in school and developing into healthy, productive young people. - Education: Inspiring Student Achievement and Excellence - Glenwood's on-campus academic program serves students in grades three through eight. Children participate in small class sizes with only 12-15 students, which allow each child to receive more individualized attention. The well-rounded curriculum of the academic program includes math, English, and science, with additional opportunities in technology, physical education, languages and art. Glenwood has also developed the Learning Resource Center in order to address the achievement gap for students struggling with learning disabilities, coming from low-performing, under-funded schools and/or those who experienced frequent school changes. - Community: Ensuring Positive Role Models and a Caring Family-Like Environment – Through Glenwood's family-like environment, children live in cottages with their house parents and 10-12 of their peers. The presence of stable, concerned adults in children's everyday lives preserves a semblance of a family. This allows children to regain the opportunity to simply be kids. - Support: Dynamic Partnership with the Family - Children return home every weekend to reinforce the importance of the parent's role and the preservation of the family. Glenwood works closely with parents to create a positive and healthy environment for their children. Houseparents are responsible for the children during the week. During pick-up and drop-off times, parents have the opportunity to get updated and discuss their child's progress, behavior and challenges throughout the week. Both work towards securing the best possible education and environment for their children. - Self Esteem: Instilling Highly Effective Life and Leadership Skills - Providing children with a variety of opportunities to discover their talents and interests outside the classroom is an important component of Glenwood's model. The military, sports and recreation and enrichment programs help strengthen our children's creativity, confidence and leadership skills. These programs inspire and motivate our students to realize their full potential as productive and responsible young people through positive, enriching and constructive activities that are essential for our youth to develop healthy lifestyles. - Glenwood School
