Overview

St. Bartholomew Academy says

St. Bartholomew Academy (SBA) is a Catholic elementary school with grades pre-Kindergarten through eight. The school was founded in 1950 in response to a need to provide a Catholic education for the children of the newly established parish of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. In 1992, the school became co-sponsored by the two Roman Catholic parishes in Scotch Plains, St. Bartholomew the Apostle and Immaculate Heart of Mary which are both part of the Archdiocese of Newark. In 2009, the parish family of St. Bernards & St. Stanislaus in Plainfield became a third sponsoring parish. In 2012, we welcomed the parish famiy of St. Mary's in Plainfield as a sponsoring parish.

In 2000, SBA was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools and is listed in their Directory of Accredited Schools (DOAS) Click here to access. In 2010, the Academy earned re-accreditation with the Middles States Commission on Elementary Schools. Today the school has approximately 230 students and is a thriving education institution dedicated to academic excellence in a value-forming environment.

The school is under the direction of the Religious Teachers Filippini who are based in Morristown, NJ. The Filippini order is dedicated to the ministry of education of youth and developing our children to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Curriculum

The primary goal of the instruction St. Bartholomew Academy is to assist students in acquiring mastery of content skills and then applying these skills to real-world problems and situations. The use of technology, hands-on activities, collaboration, and a cross-curricular writing program enhance our students’ learning.

The faculty and staff at SBA has committed to providing a 21st century learning environment for our students through the use of classroom technologies such as Kindle Fire tablets for our younger students, a mobile laptop lab, laptop centers in each elementary classroom, and Google Chromebooks for each middle school student. In addition, each classroom is outfitted with SMARTBoards, sound systems, and teacher computers connected to the internet via the schoolwide WiFi network. The classroom technologies provide the tools necessary to allow our students to work collaboratively and to access the myriad educational content of the internet, and teachers to provide differentiated learning opportunities.

Mission Statement

St. Bartholomew Academy is dedicated to offering students the opportunity of growing in the faith, of accepting its values, and of living the principle of truth, charity, and Christian hope. In this environment, students are encouraged to strive for their maximum academic potential and spiritual growth.

Guided by these principles, St. Bartholomew Academy aims to:Provide the means for students to develop self-esteem, considering themselves and others as individuals with God-given gifts. Foster an intellectual and creative atmosphere for academic achievement guided by Gospel values. Encourage an appreciation for creative and original thought as a part of the aesthetic experience in the education of the whole child. Guide the students toward Christian values necessary for responsible and generous stewardship to the Church and the community.
