Odyssey School is an independent, co-ed, middle school for gifted and talented students. Its unique and innovative curriculum, including on-site and off-site learning, culminates in an 8th grade, 3-week trip to Japan. Odyssey develops scholars and artists from the most promising young students. Specialists in middle school gifted education emphasize the development of emotional intelligence and tolerance for differences. Our challenging and academically rigorous curriculum has been created specifically for the unique learning needs of gifted and talented students. We enjoy a non-traditional physical education program including tai chi, yoga, karate, dance, stage compat, fencing, swimming and extensive hiking. We climb mountains (Shasta, Whitney and Fuji), and explore the Channel Islands; we explore the works of Shakespeare (attending the Oergon Shakespeare Festival annually, and learn about oceanography, biodiversity and ecological sustainability. Our 8th Grade students culminate their Japan studies with a three week trip to Japan, staying in temples and private homes, immersing themselves in the culture and language. Student self-discipline, self-knowledge and responsibility is a major focus of the educational approach at Odyssey.
