Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children prepares children with hearing loss for a successful life in the hearing world by promoting early identification of hearing loss, intervention and listening, language and speech in an auditory oral educational environment. Our doors are always open to every child with hearing loss who can benefit from our program. We believe that all Sunshine Cottage students receive an optimal education in self-contained or mainstream class placements that include both children with hearing loss and children with typical hearing. Sunshine Cottage has been preparing students for life in the hearing world since 1947 when Dela White started the school for her 18-month-old daughter who is profoundly deaf. Mrs. White believed that if given the opportunity, children with hearing impairment could learn to listen, speak and live a full, self-reliant life. Her belief has been richly rewarded through thousands of Sunshine Cottage students who have left our school to lead rewarding lives. We teach children with mild to profound hearing loss to communicate naturally and effectively using intelligible speech and pleasant-sounding voices, without the use of sign language. From newborns through high school age, children thrive in a supportive educational environment with an excellent clinical and teaching staff and state-of-the-art technology. Mission Statement Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children promotes early identification and intervention of hearing loss, and provides learning in a rich auditory-oral environment so that children with hearing loss can develop to their maximum potential through listening, language and speech.Core BeliefsWe believe that children who are hearing impaired can learn to listen and talk if early identification, amplification, and intervention take place.We believe that all children can learn in a stimulating environment led and encouraged by educated, dedicated teaching staff.We believe that optimal educational needs can be met for all Sunshine Cottage students through self-contained and mainstream classes.We believe that the participation of parents and their partnership with the school are critical to the success of the child.
