The Montessori method is an approach to education thatemphasizes the individual potential of young children whichis developed by means of a unique strategy utilizingspecially trained teachers and scientific teaching materials.Based on a method developed by Maria Montessori, anItalian physician and educator, children learn to work bythemselves in the prepared environment, enjoying thepresence of other children, but not necessarily workingdirectly with them. Dr. Montessori developed her method ofeducation over a number of years and was honored andrespected for her developments in education throughout theworld at the time of her death in 1952.Children who have had the benefit of a Montessorienvironment are freer at a later age to devote themselvesmore exclusively to the development of their intellectualfaculties. The Montessori teacher is able to teach the childindividually because he/she is aware of the learningreadiness and interests of each child: when a child is readyto learn new skills, the teacher steers the child toward a newactivity or project. In the new activity, the student will workat his or her own pace, with guidance and assistance fromthe teacher. The developmental teaching materials are designed to testunderstanding, correct errors, and train the childs mind tothink in logical patterns. The well prepared classroomenvironment helps the child to be self-disciplined,independent and to respect the rights of others. - Step By Step Montessori
