Overview

Stoneleigh Burnham School says

Stoneleigh-Burnham School, founded in 1869, is a girls’ boarding and day school nestled in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Educating girls grades 7-12 and post-graduate on its 100-acre campus, the school inspires its students to value intellectual curiosity, to embrace diversity, and to act with integrity. Stoneleigh-Burnham is the only girls’ school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

Girls develop best when they are in a community that knows them and where they feel connected. With its history of fostering the development of strong female identities, its safe and inclusive multi-cultural environment, and its dedication to understanding how girls best learn and grow, Stoneleigh-Burnham School guides emerging women to become active agents of their own destiny.

Curriculum

Our intentionally small school provides a supportive environment for girls to push themselves and to take risks in their learning. With classes that average just 10 students, there is no back row in which to hide. Every voice in the room counts and each girl will contribute to every class with her unique opinions, worldview, and ideas. Our teachers emphasize the practical application of their lessons while encouraging students’ self-discovery. Our middle and upper school curriculums challenge each student to understand the multi-sensory, collaborative process by which she learns about herself and the world.

As the first and only girls’ school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, we are dedicated to ensuring our girls graduate with the ability to draw connections across disciplines and to be active, compassionate lifelong learners.

Mission Statement

Stoneleigh-Burnham School is an academic community that fosters an international perspective. We inspire girls to pursue meaningful lives based on honor, respect and intellectual curiosity. Each student is challenged to discover her best self and graduate with confidence to think independently and act ethically, secure in the knowledge that her voice will be heard.

Financial Aid Information

55% of our current students receive some form of assistance from Stoneleigh-Burnham, and many other families have been counseled in creative financing options. We are committed to supporting qualified, well-rounded, and positive students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from and contribute to our community. Most of the available financial aid is offered to families who apply by February 15th. We are generally unable to offer financial aid to international students.

Housing Information

Lifelong friendships are made at Stoneleigh-Burnham, and many of those friendships begin in the dorm rooms. Living together in dorms brings girls together like a family – a socially, economically and ethnically diverse family. Girls and their roommates make their living spaces uniquely theirs, and Houseparents and Residential Assistants give boarding students the round-the-clock support they need and go out of their way to make each and every girl feel special and important.

International Admission Information

Success in the 21st century is dependent on tolerance and global mindedness. Stoneleigh-Burnham welcomes students from over 18 countries. Students here learn as much about diverse peoples, places, cultures, and communication styles from their peers as they do from the faculty.

Student Life Information

Turning up the long, tree-lined driveway into campus, you see rolling fields, stables, riding paddocks, and very often, horses. Sitting atop the hill are the school’s cozy white stucco buildings, where girls learn, live, and grow. There’s a wealth of athletic facilities, including tennis complex, sports fields, fitness rooms, outdoor pool, and gymnasium. The arts facilities include a theater, music practice rooms, art studios, and dance studios. The library boasts more than 10,000 books, plus magazines and movies, and many other amenities.
