James Irwin Charter Elementary School is a Core Knowledge school that accelerates students' learning through a highly interactive Direct Instruction - Explicit Teaching model. Through "Instructivism" - where the teachers provide many opportunities for students to learn and respond, gaining success and confidence through ever-building skills and applications, students truly "learn more in less time." Positive classroom structures are carefully layered in each class (using Dr. Sprick's CHAMPS model), so that students are given a basis for respectful interactions with teachers and each other. Every classroom has a teacher and a "teacher-in-training," allowing for smaller success grouping for reading and math instruction. Cursive handwriting is started in Kindergarten, and supported in every grade level.


Core Knowledge school. Each student will have two periods of Reading and Math per day. Reading and math are taught in smaller success groups. - Students have extensive composition & grammar instruction: Adventures in Language (Gr. 1-5) & High Performance Writing genres (Gr. 3-5). -"Cursive First" school: all students learn cursive handwriting, starting in Kindergarten. - Connecting Math Concepts (Kinder- Gr. 2); Saxon math (Gr. 2-5), with math facts supplements, and other extensions. - Students have Art, PE, or Music every day.

Through a sound curriculum based on the great ideas and values of our Western Heritage, students will be prepared to become active and responsible members of the community.
