Overview

Berean Christian School says

Berean Christian School was founded in 1980 as a ministry of Berean Bible Church, a non-denominational church in Knoxville, Tennessee. Our school is adjacent to the church on 10 acres of land, near the Knoxville Zoo on Prosser Road. At the time of the school’s founding, church leaders saw in the public school system a decline in student expectations and accountability, as well as increasingly humanistic philosophies.

Berean Christian School was established to meet a growing need for Christ-centered, top-notch private education. The school’s mission, tenets and driving principles are built on the foundation of God’s revealed Word, the Bible.

We teach that God, not man, is the source of absolute truth and wisdom. Our faculty teach a God-centered view of the world, as it pertains to every area of a student’s life. This process of education helps students to think and live as Christians, and equips them to influence their world, while making wise personal and vocational choices.

Over the last 34 years, Berean has grown and changed with the addition of new facilities, new faculty, and increased enrollment. One thing that has not changed is our dedication to raising up godly young men and women and equipping them with the spiritual and educational foundations they need to impact their world for Christ.

Curriculum

BCS’s academics are aimed at maximizing the potential of each and every child. From the time our students join the BCS community, they experience a nurturing atmosphere of learning and discovery in academics, athletics, fine arts, and service. Our teachers and staff use innovative methods to engage our students and build a community of learners. With our academic program, BCS students meet or exceed benchmarks on standardized tests at all grade levels. Berean Christian School partners with parents to prepare students for college and a life of service to our Lord through excellence in Bible-centered instruction and through godly example. To fulfill this partnership, BCS is committed to providing:

Academic Excellence
Biblical Worldview
Christian Character

Academic excellence involves the pursuit of an ever-improving learning environment where all students can demonstrate academic growth. BCS features a small classroom environment, averaging fewer than 20 students per class. This gives children an opportunity to experience more individual attention to their needs and learning styles. BCS also aligns its instruction to state benchmarks and national standards, all through a Biblical worldview. In doing so, our students have the privilege of understanding the world in which they live from a meaningful and eternal perspective.

Biblical worldview is the governing perspective that God is the source of all truth, and He has revealed in the Bible everything we need to know for life and godliness. The Bible is at the core of what BCS teaches, and encouraging students to develop a biblical worldview is integrated daily into the classroom. Students are equipped with the virtues needed to evaluate situations and empower them to impact their culture for Christ. The integration of biblical faith and learning is at the core of what we do.

Christian character is the expression of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-26). Christian character is revealed in the attitudes and actions of students in the form of faith, integrity, unity, joy, and much more. Our Bible curriculum and chapel programs are used at BCS to promote unity and biblical character education. The program includes core biblical values that equip our students to live a Christian life in a challenging and demanding world. Berean Christian School focuses on strengthening the minds of students and encouraging the development of Christ-like characteristics in each student.

Mission Statement

Our Core Values

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” - Luke 2:52

The core values behind our school’s mission and philosophies are:

Christ-Centered Living
Spiritual Growth
Academic Excellence
Social Impact for Christ

Our Mission

Berean Christian School is a caring team of parents and teachers who believes it is our job to raise up and serve Christian men and women. We are committed to excellence through a Christ-centered, biblically integrated education which gives students the knowledge and abilities to be leaders, and impact their world for Christ.

“Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever.” - Hebrews 13:20-21

Our Philosophy

We believe the main focus of Berean Christian School is to be Christ-centered and we want to offer students a chance to view life as God sees it. Two core goals of our school are redemption and restoration, and that’s why we make the gospel a central part of what we do.

By doing this, we can create opportunities for non-believers to experience salvation and for believers to build on that foundation. We want to impart to our students the wisdom they need to present themselves complete in Christ and the knowledge and tools to impact their world.

We believe all truth is God’s truth. First, is revealed truth, that is, those things conveyed by the Word of God. This is paramount since it offers the necessary perspective that leads to discovered truth. That is why the Bible (God’s written word) is the foundational and integrative element for the pursuit of excellence in our entire curriculum.

God has given parents the ultimate responsibility for educating their children. We also believe some of that responsibility has been given to Berean, since it functions as an extension of the home. We believe it can be our role to facilitate Christian education, without overstepping or taking the place of the primary authority of the home. We see this responsibility as a high honor and it is not one we take lightly. Our school can best fulfill its mission when educators, coaches, and staff are able to work cooperatively with godly parents to give students a consistently God-centered environment.

Extracurriculars

Our students’ best interests are at the core of everything we do here at Berean Christian School. While our main role (as an extension of the Christian home) is to provide students with a Christ-centered, biblically-integrated education, we also understand the importance of the student experience outside the classroom. This is why we offer a wide variety of ways that students can get involved through clubs, volunteer opportunities and extracurricular activities. These experiences help to foster leadership as well as discipleship, teaching students how to live rich, abundant lives. There’s our annual fall retreat, a bonding experience for students that promotes spiritual growth and sets the tone for each upcoming school year. Another highly-anticipated annual event at Berean is our “Lovin’ on the Lower Campus,” in which high school students minister to elementary students with a day of games and activities on the last day of school before Christmas. From the first day of kindergarten to high school commencement, student life at Berean is a rich experience as we prepare students to go out into the world, carrying the light of Christ.
