I started when I was in junior high, editing my scientifically focused high school sister's english essays. I helped her make the transition from the curt procedural tone of lab reports to the more holistic and creative voice needed for humanities classes. Once I reached high school I worked in my school's writing center two days a week editing and assisting my peers with rewrites, organization, and idea development for papers and college essays. Once I got to college my role as a tutor became more informal. As a rare english major amongst a school dominated by pre-med and engineering students, my more math/science orientated friends frequently asked me to help them with everything from a set of directions they were writing for their technical writing class, to an argumentation paper they had to ace to fulfill a writing requirement. As we entered our senior year, I developed a reputation for being able to whip med school essays into shape, and tutored several of my friends and teammates on how to make their essays more coherent and interesting, setting them apart from the crowd. Most of my experience is working with non-english majors who need help refining their ideas into an argument. However, my four years as an english major has also given me ample experience peer editing other majors. Whether it is a total overhaul of an idea, or minor tweaking needed to push an essay from good to great, I am always happy to help.
