I've very recently realized my dream of moving to Portland, and I'm looking for a chance to use my substantial technical and scientific education and experience to help people. I speak Spanish, I'm an excellent writer with a large vocabulary, and I enjoy the company of kids and teens, having two of my own. I really love math and science, and I want to show people how fun and exciting they are. I have a BS in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (1986) and an MS in astronomy from the University of Arizona (1991.) I volunteered in my children's classrooms all through elementary and middle school, tutoring students who were having trouble keeping up in math. My kids attended a bilingual immersion school (River Glen in San Jose, CA) so most of this tutoring was actually done in Spanish. I try to connect new concepts with ones the student is already familiar with, and focus on the underlying logic rather than rote techniques. I also think it is very important for students to be able to estimate quantities to gauge whether an answer makes physical sense.Fun Facts: I ran for governor of California in 2008, when I got to go on TV on the Jay Leno show. For the past five years, I've been teaching cooking on a farm, where I've made lunch for up to 100 people at a time. And I can tell you how long an elephant seal can stay underwater and why it sheds its skin.
