TEDxEMU - Heather Neff - I have a face. I am not a face.

Dr. Neff will discuss the societal impact of raising girls to believe that physical appearance is the most important demonstration of worth in our society, and inspire women to reevaluate the foundations of their self-esteem, sense of purpose and goal-orientation in life.Dr. Heather Neff is the Director of the Eastern Michigan University McNair Scholars Program and is a Professor of English. Neff studied at the University of Michigan, the Sorbonne and the Universities of Basel and Zurich in Switzerland. A specialist in African American Literature, Neff is the author of five novels, including the American Library Association Honor Book "Wisdom," and the human trafficking story "Leila: The Weighted Silence of Memory." Neff has received the Eastern Michigan University Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and is a Michigan Distinguished Professor.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
