Serge de Gheldere, 36, is CEO of Futureproof/ed, one of the first companies to exclusively focus on products/ services that reconcile sustainability, design and quality. In other words: a TED spirit catcher. Serge has a degree of electromechanical engineer, with a master in polymer and composites engineering. He worked successfully on the first system to eliminate blood-borne pathogens in platelet transfusion products (for which he was awarded two patents). This experience in material science, mechanical and electrival engineering and manufacturing caused a natural evolution towards FutureProof/ed: finding ways to develop and design better products. Products that are more attractive, life-enhancing, environmentally sound, ecologically intelligent in both product and space design and the workshop, training programs and consultancy to help inject this new type of thinking everywhere. In between all of that, Serge is a designer-in-residence in the xDesign program at Yale University. Recorded at the Antwerp Zoo on September 5th 2010. More information: www.tedxflanders.be About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
