How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit

When it comes to the outdoors, and as the weather gets cooler, an open fire pit is a great way to entertain or simply relax by. There are many different styles of fire pits that Lowe's carries, so make sure you choose a fire pit that suits you. Before you begin building there a few things to consider. First check with local ordinances and your home owner associations' guidelines to see if fire pits are permitted. Next, think about location. Make sure the area is open and there are no low trees. Also consider the wind direction so that the smoke is not always blowing into your home. The fire pit we are building is going to be set on a paver base, make sure you are not building on a deck, however if you have an existing patio, that is fine. If you want to learn how to build a paver base or a patio, watch this video: First lay the lid of your steel base bowl in the middle of the paver base. Position the first layer of block around the cover, making sure the joints are tight. Add levels 2, 3 and 4 staggering the joints. Next line the inside of the block with fire proof blocks, insert the steel bowl, insert the grate and you are done. To get the fire going, place a starter log on top of the grate. Add several pieces of wood and light the log. Cover this with the screen, and you are all set to enjoy a nice fire.
