In 2009, the Beacom School moved into a new facility with state of the art technology in every classroom. Each of our undergraduate majors results in a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree. We also offer a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) as well as a Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA). The Beacom School of Business is one of only five percent of business schools worldwide to achieve AACSB accreditation, the highest distinction that business schools can receive. Our graduate and undergraduate students rank exceptionally high in academic achievement. Recent graduates scored in the top three percent of all students who took the national Educational Testing Service exams. We maintain a low faculty-to-student ratio, and undergraduate business class size averages 27 students. The Beacom School provides excellent internship opportunities with more than half of undergraduate students completing at least one internship, and the job placement rate is 87%! More than $400,000 in scholarships is awarded annually to students, and there are many opportunities for both graduates and undergraduates to supplement their academic experience with hands-on learning opportunities such as managing a $1 million investment fund. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in business-related student organizations, many of which are national award winners. The Beacom School of Business regularly hosts national business leaders, government officials, successful alumni and other guest speakers to discuss current business issues and offer leadership perspectives.

The Beacom School of Business offers three types of MBA programs: on-campus, online, or hybrid (online and on-campus). All three require an undergraduate degree, GMAT scores, resume, statement of purpose, and two letters of recommendation. The average GMAT score for last year was 552.

Student Life

Students here “are diverse people of all different age groups” who are “intelligent, ambi­tious, outgoing, and friendly.” “These people will be successful someday,” boasts one stu­dent. “Most are young (early to mid-20s)” and “either just completed their undergrad or have a few years of work experience.” Students work together and are “eager to help answer each other’s questions and share how course topics relate to their jobs or past experiences.” The school needs “more ethnic diversity” though, as the student body is predominantly white. “I wouldn’t say ethnically diverse [students], but [they are] intellec­tually very diverse, with points of view that add to classroom discussion in a very pro­ductive manner,” one student offers.“The University of South Dakota is in the small town of Vermillion,” a “very outdoor-ori­ented town” that provides “a small-town feel with a big-town university.” It is the kind of town where “you see your friends on every corner.” “Many students walk to class,” although that can be a problem during the cold winters. “I’ve walked to class this year multiple times in sub-zero weather. It’d be great to have underground tunnels,” one stu­dent says. “The city of Vermillion is very limiting,” and there isn’t much to do “if you don’t hunt or fish.” However, the actual campus is “very nice, especially for business stu­dents who get to enjoy a brand new building.” Students did wish “housing officials [weren’t so] anti-drinking”. As one student puts it, “It’s a college campus; get over it.”


One of the Beacom School of Business’s “greatest strengths is placement for internships and jobs.” The school brings companies into the “business school to hold interviews for jobs.” “I received an internship and a job with a top-four accounting firm,” says one stu­dent. However, others say “the job fairs have the same 30 employers” that are mostly “accounting and insurance companies.” The school needs to gain “more national contacts for employment of new graduates (more specifically in major commerce areas . . . like Chicago and New York),” and “there needs to be more variety in company types and in specific employers.” About 48 percent of students are in finance and accounting, and 38 percent of recent grad­uates found government employment. The average salary for new graduates is about $43,000. Some companies that have recruited out of the University of South Dakota include FDIC, Citi, and Sanford Health.

The University of South Dakota “has a very good reputation among business schools in the area.” Indeed, it has the best reputation as “it is the only accredited school in the state,” and students in South Dakota appreciate the quality education and proximity to home. “Tuition is extremely affordable” at the University of South Dakota, which allows stu­dents “to pursue an MBA without taking on added debt.” “I attended USD for my under­graduate degree, and I was offered a traineeship position as part of the graduate pro­gram,” a health services administration student explains. Students also “love the online MBA program,” which is something of a rarity for MBA programs. “My research that led me to select USD indicated that it is one of the few online MBA programs that is accredit­ed,” says one student. The online program “is tough and challenging, yet possible to com­plete while working a full-time job.” The University of South Dakota “has great facilities. Many of the major buildings, includ­ing the business school and student center, have been built within the last couple years.” The “solid administration” is always “only a phone call or email away.” “IT help has great customer service and follow-up.” However, some students feel “the University tries to be forward-looking but ends up relying on outdated logic and ‘rules.’ The University needs to evolve along with social attitudes and needs of its students.” “USD routinely makes big changes or implementations without seeking any student feedback” and “seems to be focused mostly on undergraduate enrollment more than on investing in and improving current programs.” Fortunately, the program has also been making some positive changes to the MBA. Previously, students noted that the school was “very flexible” with course schedules; today, administrators have reworked the program to allow more frequent course offerings. “The faculty is the greatest strength at this school,” providing great “human capital” for the school. “The professors at USD are a very diverse group of individuals” and “take a vested interest in the success of their students.” “The professors are very professional and have an open-door policy. They strongly encourage anyone to stop by and ask questions or just talk,” one student explains. Although other students caution that while “the pro­fessors that have been teaching for a while are amazing,” many other teachers “with little to no real-world experience . . . have no idea how to teach” and rely too heavily on PowerPoint. The school boasts “small class sizes” which help students “get to know each other and their professors and actually develop friendships and relationships that help the learning environment.”
