Student, Westchester Academy for International Studies, Class of 2016,
At WAIS, one of the most popular extracurricular activities is National Honor Society, or NHS. It is for students who have at least a 6.0 GPA (out of a 6.5 scale). Although it seems like a very difficult standard to uphold, it's met by a large number of students at Westchester. The society is responsible for several events like giving out carnations during Valentine's Day. Another club would be Interact, which is a volunteer group that allows students to earn service hours as well as help the community. Each year they visit the Houston Food Bank at least one and help those in need, like the custodians during the holidays. The most popular extracurricular is without a doubt League of Champions. Westchester is a charter school, which means it's the size of a private school but is free to attend, like a public school. WAIS is not allowed to have sports and so this club allows students to team up and compete against each other in activities like football and frisbee competitions that are selected by member votes. I would recommend joining all of these extracurricular activities not only because they look good on a college application, but are also great ways to interact with friends or the community, and gain new skills.
