Student, Valparaiso High School, Class of 2016,
It was the fall of 2014, the start of Friday Night Lights and my 3rd year playing High School football. I was on top of the world starting as a defensive end, as I worked really hard in the off season and all summer to fight for this position. Working with the coaches and perfecting my technique, each practice, each game.
I was halfway into the season, we were playing our team rival on their turf. I had so much excitement and adrenaline running through me.The very first play I zipped past the offensive tackle and I tackled the running back for a loss of two yards. I was so pumped up after that first play. However, they did not run it to my side until about a quarter of the way into the second quarter. When they finally decided to run it to my side again, I fought my way outside of the tackle to whom was fighting to get around me. While I was fighting to keep containment of the outside edge, I felt a sharp pain in the back of both of my legs. As the running back rounded the corner to try to get passed me, I ran as fast as I could to just push him out of bounds.
When the second quarter finally came to an end I decided to tell my coach about the sharp pains I had in my legs. He told me to stretch them every time I came off the field to make sure I would not get hurt. Surprisingly, I managed to play the rest of the game and we ended up winning that game 13-7. During the second half I wasn't in too much pain. It was after the game when my legs started cramping up and hurting really bad. Luckily, the bus ride home was only 20 minutes. When I got back to my high school I went to see our trainer. He told me to go see the team doctor the next day.
During my doctors appointment I was diagnosed with both of my hamstrings torn. I was devastated. I have never been injured before...I was scared. I would be out for the rest of the season. I would have to take some medication, mainly some painkillers to help deal with the pain and physical therapy three times a week for the next 12 weeks or longer.During my treatments, I always asked detailed questions to my therapist as to how the treatments would work add help heal my muscles.
I have always been intrigued how the human body works and heals. Thus, my interest in the Sciences has grown since middle school and the AP classes throughout High School, Anatomy,Chemistry and Math.
My college goal is to continue with what I love most, sciences and football.
