Student, Atherton High School, Class of 2016,
At Atherton there are a lot of options when it comes to extracurricular activities. To me the three most popular are National Honors Society (NHS), Rho Kappa, and Y-club. The reason they're very popular is students at Atherton are often looking for service opportunities which NHS and Rho Kappa offer. The reason why Y-club is popular is often helps students develop public speaking skills and speech writing skills. This club also combines the love of debate and community service by serving the Commonwealth. The extracurricular I would most recommend is Y-Club. If there's one important life lesson Y-Club has taught me, it's to use your voice because it's powerful. If you want to see a change in the world, start by using your voice. Now I voice my opinion on certain issues without any hesitation or the fear of my opinion being "not valid." Alongside Y-club I would also recommend Rho Kappa as well. Rho Kappa is one of a kind and also Atherton serves as the Alpha chapter of Rho Kappa. Rho Kappa is similar to NHS except it also combines the love of social studies students have. The service opportunities we're often offered involve social studies one way or another. It's an easy way for us to take what we've learned in social studies and use it outside of the classroom.
