As a graduate of Stony Brook University (Class of 2009), is that there is no "typical look" for a person at the university. One reason why I picked SBU was because of its diversity -- Forbes has a pie chart that breaks down the diversity of the student body.

Beyond physical appearance, many Stony Brook students are a from New York State--especially Long Island and New York City--which is to be expected! Stony Brook is one of the best schools in the SUNY system, and allows its students to get a quality education for a fraction of similar, private schools. That said, I knew many people from out of state, and from other countries, too. Considering the school is so large (over 24,000 students), it's not hard to find students from other areas besides Nassau or Suffolk counties.

If you have any follow up questions about Stony Brook, don't hesitate to ask! I had a great experience there, and am proud to be a Seawolf.

Stony Brook's population is extremely diverse, but the one thing that all Stony Brook students agree on is that you have to work hard. Academics are extremely important. Stony Brook is one of the top 1% of Universities in the world. If you are not prepared to work hard and manage your time wisely, you are in for a big surprise. It is easy to fall behind. No one is constantly watching you. Sometimes classes are so big, professors don't know or care who's missing.

The typical Stony Brook University student is usually a engineering, bio, biochem, or ams major. However, many of the students are also very creative and continue to sing and dance even if that is not what they are perusing as their major.

Stony Brook typically revolves around studying hard, finding the best food on campus, and making the most of your experience by putting yourself out there. This school is not for students who like to be coddled by professors or slowly eased into independence. Stony Brook requires you to quickly swim in the deep end and form mature study habits in order to succeed. With that being said, the vast majority of students are eager to bond over this mutual academic difficulty and it will only enhance the friendships you make.

Also, they need to be opportunistic and not afraid to work hard, challenge themselves and be outside their comfort zone. Some social networking skills are a bonus, as well.

You want to be very motivated and capable of studying outside of classes. Many of the classes will be failed if you don't go to every lecture. Lazy people will have a difficult time here.

There are two answers to this question:

  1. The commuter: This student typically lives in the Stony Brook area or has completed Community College somewhere else and now transferred to Stony Brook. They usually have a part-time job and set up their schedule so that they can balance school and work. They want to have the convenience of being close to home as well as getting closer to their chosen career path.

  2. The dormer: This student lives on campus and is usually from the NYC or other Long Island areas. They wanted to stay close to home but also gain the experience of a real college. They are most likely involved in clubs, Greek Life, or other groups on campus. Not to say that a commuter does not, but there are definitely less commuters in these groups.

Now to answer that second question a little more in depth: The type of person that should attend Stony Brook is someone who wants to meet real people. Stony Brook is a state college so most of us got into more popular schools and just could not afford to go. We are all around the middle class economic level with dreams of one day making it big out there. We have people who come from real homes, have experienced real issues and want to help others out there. We have future doctors, lawyers, scientists and more. Stony Brook is filled with bright young adults that never had things handed to them and will work to make sure that they can have the best future available to themselves.

There is definitely no typical Stony Brook student. We have a very diverse community that boasts many different nationalities and various identities. The only thing I can say about a SBU student is that they are hard working and tenacious. As a research facility, SBU professors hold their students up to the highest standards.

A typical Stony Brook University student is stressed. Very stressed. Super stressed. Extremely stressed. Ultra stressed. When the stress levels increase to a certain amount, the student experiences intense irritability and an imbalanced psyche. The stress eventually plateaus at the maximum stress of 145537 b (for baldys the official unit for stress). Coupled with the full moon that appears once a month, the student will undergo a transformation of Michael Jackson's Thriller proportions. The student will grow blue fur, fangs, and an irresistible urge to lose to Binghamton. But...once every 100 years...a student will ascend beyond this form. In addition to the previously mentioned conditions the student's head will grow 10 times its original size, grow a tail, and feel compelled to attend EVERY sporting event. This student's name is Wolfie, and the typical Stony Brook University student is very embarrassed of him.

A typical Stony Brook University proudly wears the university color Red. Students are always at the library. They are also finding ways to involve their fellow students in the developments of medical and science topics. You can find a student walking to campus in their medical lab coats or nurse scrubs and carrying a Grande cup of Starbucks espresso.
