Student, Varina High School, Class of 2016,
The type of student that attends Varina High School should have a strong spirit and not let outside influences determine what you believe about yourself. Over the course of my four years at VHS there have been incidents, covered by the local news outlets, that portray the average student as a fighter or troublemaker. Most of us are not like that in fact only a small percentage of the student body get suspended for fights. I repeatedly had to defend my school as not being less than the other schools in my county. Eventually I realized that my grades and my actions speak for me. I am an engaged Honors and AP student that believes in the Varina community, students that attend and should attend Varina need to have a sense of our community as a whole. We are not a monolithic group, there are low to middle income families, middle to high income families, old farm land, subdivisions, apartment complexes and people from different racial and ethnic groups. The type of student who should attend VHS should understand that all those differences are what make us a unique part of our county and of the Commonwealth of Virginia and they should commit to continuing to keep us strong and great.
