Student, Monte Vista High School, Class of 2016,
National Honor Society is a community service club in which members are selected based on academic merit. (I have been a member for the past two years). Honestly it’s a bit misleading because participants don’t do as much as one would expect. To stay in the club, all one must do is donate a certain amount of money/miscellaneous items to other clubs each semester (albeit, they are charity clubs - but still). I wish the club would host events for going out and physically volunteering somewhere.
Sports is a huge part of Monte Vista culture, especially basketball. Our basketball team won the CA State Championships just last year. (This year the title went to our archrival, and I cannot deny that I laughed cynically to myself when I heard the news). Other popular sports include football and soccer. Many of our sports players get into top colleges on sports scholarships.
Interact is a large community service club. The club teams up with The Wheelchair Foundation each year to raise money and awareness for disabled people around the world who do not have access to wheelchairs.
As for which extracurriculars I recommend, I say do whatever truly interests you, not what everyone else is doing. My school has a huge variety of great clubs, and there is bound to be one you are passionate about.
