Overview

Albuquerque Academy says

At Albuquerque Academy, we believe that children's lives change when their natural passion for learning is nurtured and transformed into habits of life-long learning and reflection. We believe that the world changes as these children learn to serve country and community with wisdom, conviction, and compassion. In light of these beliefs we serve students of talent and character, offering them an education that broadens their perspectives, sharpens their minds, strengthens their bodies, and engages their hearts; we commit to creating a caring, inclusive, and just community, using the geography and culture of our home in the Southwest to enrich our educational programs and to foster creativity, personal balance, and a connection to the natural world; we devote our resources to ensure economic accessibility to our students and to support the wider community through outreach and community service; and we entrust this mission to our graduates and successors as we preserve our resources and serve the generations of children to come.

Curriculum

There are twelve academic departments at Albuquerque Academy. Faculty from the 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12 Divisions each are part of an academic department. A faculty chair oversees each department's curriculum, personnel, resources, and budgets. Chairs also communicate across departments and among the three divisions to encourage interdisciplinary connections.

The Academy's educational program emphasizes six fundamental academic disciplines: English, history, mathematics, world languages, science, and performing and visual arts. Study in all six disciplines is required each year through grade 9. A decreasing number of requirements in the upper grades allows for a wider choice of electives.

All students in grades 6 through 10 participate in experiential education, which complements other academic programs with challenges that are both physical and moral. In addition, participation in physical education (grades 6-9) or interscholastic athletics or physical education (grades 10-12) is required of all students.

Mission Statement

We believe that children's lives change when their natural passion for learning is nurtured and transformed into habits of life-long learning and reflection. We believe that the world changes as these children learn to serve country and community with wisdom, conviction, and compassion.

In light of these beliefs, • We serve students of talent and character, offering them an education that broadens their perspectives, sharpens their minds, strengthens their bodies, and engages their hearts. • We commit to creating a caring, inclusive, and just community, using the geography and culture of our home in the Southwest to enrich our educational programs and to foster creativity, personal balance, and a connection to the natural world. • We devote our resources to ensure economic accessibility to our students and to support the wider community through outreach and community service. • We entrust this mission to our graduates and successors as we preserve our resources and serve the generations of children to come.

Admission Information

At Albuquerque Academy, we look for the brightest students in the region, those with intelligence, character, and an eagerness to learn. We're serious about creating an educational experience that shapes sharp-minded students into purposeful, ethical, independent learners. Our students typically come from over seventy different schools throughout the greater Albuquerque region, and they all share one thing in common: a nearly insatiable curiosity. This trait forms the foundation of their academic lives. We admit students in grades 6-12 in the fall of each year. The admission process begins early — in the fall before the year of attendance — and closes in early February 2016. You may request admission information online or apply online beginning in late August. If you would like to speak with someone about admission, please call the Admission Office at 505-828-3208, or e-mail [email protected]

Financial Aid Information

The Academy Commitment to Affordability and Access Aiming to promote and maintain socioeconomic diversity among our student population, Albuquerque Academy demonstrates a strong commitment to need-based financial assistance by providing a sizable share of the school’s budget to fund the financial needs of its students. Tuition only partially covers the total cost of an Academy education. Endowment spending of close to $5,700 annually per student subsidizes tuition to support excellence and breadth throughout the Academy program and facilities. Beyond this subsidy given to all students, the Academy provides approximately twenty-seven percent of its students with additional need-based financial assistance. Albuquerque Academy is fortunate to have one of the largest financial assistance budgets among all independent schools in the United States, awarding over $4.3 million in need-based assistance each year. However, families bear the primary responsibility for financing their children’s education to the extent that they are able. The Academy’s financial assistance program exists to help ensure admitted students with demonstrated need will have the opportunity to attend; however, the budget is limited. As these funds are expended each year, some families who have qualified for assistance unfortunately will not receive it.

Finance

Finance

Private schools, including parochial and boarding, are funded through tuition and fees. The cost varies from school to school, but most families pay tuition to attend them. Many private schools offer financial aid or discounts, so it's worthwhile to ask about these options.
