Calling all mathletes. If you have a way with numbers, and enjoy crunching numbers, consider an accounting degree.

An accountant prepares and examines financials records, statements and other reports for accuracy. They’re also responsible for filing taxes accurately, and on time. Other responsibilities include analyzing business costs and profits as well as keeping an eye on financials to detect fraud. Internal auditors help a company comply with laws and regulations; public accountants have a broader range of tasks, including accounting, auditing, tax and consulting.

Clients may be diverse, too: As a public accountant, you can work for a corporation, nonprofit, individuals, and even the government. A bachelor’s degree gets you in, but many in the field continue their education to pursue a master’s in science in accounting or become a Certified Public Accounts (CPA). Some accountants may offer financial and investment planning as well.

Famous accounting majors include author John Grisham and musician Mick Jagger.
