Do you like to take things apart to find out how they work? Apply that curiosity to a career in mechanical engineering. You’ll learn to design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal devices, such as tools, engines and machines. The coursework includes research papers and gaining experience in a cooperative education program, applying what you’ve learning to real-world projects. Many programs are 5-year tracks.

Typical classes include mechanical design, materials science, energy systems, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Some graduates find work designing or analyzing manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heat and cooling systems, medical devices, and even work in the fields of robotics and aerospace technology. Some mechanical engineers also sell their services, and in that case, must be properly licensed by the state they’re doing business in. Further education in graduate studies will foster a transition to managerial positions.

Alfred Hitchcock studied mechanical engineering before falling in love with film. The same traits that would have made him a successful engineer—meticulous attention to detail and a creative problem solver—served him well in the motion picture industry.
