If you enjoy working with children, are compassionate, have an extraordinary amount of patience, and are always making sure everybody feels like part of the group, consider majoring in special education. You’ll no doubt feel rewarded teaching someone how to do something. As a special education teacher, you’ll be tasked with teaching students with a range of disabilities: learning, mental, emotional, and physical. As such, you’ll need to know how to adapt coursework for children with mild to moderate disabilities and teach children with severe disabilities ways to communicate. Courses that cover assessment and curriculum will help, as well as others like human development, psychology, sociology, and behavior management. You will also spend a semester student teaching.

Besides a bachelor’s degree, you’ll need to be certified or licensed in the state in which you work. While most teachers are employed by public school systems, there are opportunities in private schools, through childcare services and other institutions. Teachers also manage their students’ Individualized education programs, or IEPs.
