The Antioch School is the oldest democratic alternative school in the country.
The school is run democratically. Students, along with teachers, create the curriculum and make school rules.
For over 90 years The Antioch School has successfully educated generations of children without using grades, tests, or homework, based on the belief that they inhibit curiosity, risk taking, and true learning.
It is a place in which children are encouraged to pursue their innate curiosity wherever, and as far as, their abilities can take them. Children are encouraged to take the next step, to risk, to make mistakes and to try again as they find their own unique ways of learning. Through example and direct experience, children learn self-discipline, self-direction, value setting, and the relationship between choice and consequence.
The Antioch School is a place where play is seen to be the finest natural way of learning. Play is the center from which children learn how to get along with one another, to know themselves, and learn about the world around them. Learning through play and being curious about the world are seen as essential parts of being human. They are to be nurtured for their own sake, and as the foundation upon which a child's continued learning will be built.

"The school ought to emphasize the joy of living. Youth is naturally exuberant. School experiences... in discovering the tempting secrets of science and in listening to the appeal of good literature, history, music and art, should help young people to acquire an appreciation of life which will carry over into their adult years the youthful joy of living."
– Arthur E. Morgan - School Founder 1921
